The Devil's Advocate (Continued)

In the past couple of weeks I have had the opportunity to visit my parents and talk about some of the things that I have mentioned in my previous posts.  I told them about my opinions and they expressed their views to me as well, it would be ignorant of me to say that we had a lively exchange it would have to be labeled more as a subtle argument with underscoring hostility.

The first thing we talked about was people paying their fair share in income tax.  I felt my argument was strong.  I said the economy was bad and that people were having a hard enough time paying their own bills without adding a bunch of taxes onto the pile of debt they owed.  It was also unfair that so many prices were rising as well as the level of individual debt.  I felt it was the fault and greed of those at the top who made life so miserable for those on the bottom.  Most people have to work two or three jobs just to be able to support their families because they could not afford college or were just not able to attend a finishing school for various reasons.  Record numbers of Americans are falling below the poverty line because the level of debt accumulated outweighs the income generated by those individuals.

My mother agreed but scoffed at the idea that it was the fault of the well of for the woes of the world.  I find it interesting that the poor blame the rich for their troubles and  the rich blame the poor for theirs.  But in the end we me must ask ourselves the truth and try and look at this as objectively as possible.  I have thought about it for a long time and come to the conclusion that the blame rests on everyone,  it is the fault of every individual for the state of things in this country and the world as a whole.  It is my fault, it is your fault and it is their fault as well, no one is blameless in this.

If this country is to continue on we must understand that the responsibility for our future rests solely on the shoulders of all of us.  We have come to a historical crossroads in our country where the masses have been unwittingly pulled into a dense political and socioeconomic conflict between parties and countries.  For the first time in almost a century we as a nation of individuals have had to begin to stand on our own against the corruption of those who would play god over us.  And while I do see the benefits to a nanny state I cannot in good conscience find any reason that we should violate the founding principles this country was built on just to gain a false sense of security.  There will always be bad people out there but if we allow fear to control our lives then we have abandoned what made us special as a country in the first place.  It is easy to go about our days and keep out heads buried in the sand, but eventually the tide of tyranny will reach us and we will have to deal with a system that we helped build.
