Vampire Myth and Truth part 1

The True Vampire

I am a true vampire, a creature of darkness and lore.  You have written books about me.  You have created movies and shows around the myth of my existence.  In your world I am but a fairy tale, a horror story to excite the senses and fray the nerves.  I am the subject of passion and desire.  I am none of these things.

I exist, that is the first thing you need to know. I exist. The second is this. You are my cattle but that does not mean I lack respect or a sense of humanity.  Vampires are highly evolved in civility, we no longer prey on humans like we used to.  The centuries have brought much ingenuity in the cultivation of blood for our needs.  But the present is not the tale I wish to tell you.  There is an origin to our species, an origin humanity has never known.  We are not the result of magic or curses, we are not the living dead.  We are an amalgamation of accidental mutation and evolution.  We are the product of a time in human history where the human species bottle-necked and we were forced to adapt to an environment so unlike that of the planet we live on now that it forced us to evolve alternate means of attaining sustenance.

But evolution was not the sole cause of our transformation, there was also  large increase in solar activity in this time, although in our infancy we did not understand the concept of science suffice it to say that the increase in radiation mutated our bodies making us creature of the night unable to withstand even the small amounts of radiation that the sun gives off today, but with this weakness came a strength.  Because of our fear of the sun our bodies adapted to the shadows giving us incredible night vision and longevity.  Our cells repair almost instantly and we do not age, but if we were to step out into the sun it would be as if someone lit tinder beneath us.  This is where that particular myth about our species comes from.  With this evolution we were gifted much more time than the typical human to learn from our mistakes and like the rest of humanity we refrained from repeating them.

We were able to avoid the pitfalls of man.  The inquisition and the crusades had no effect on us, we kept out of the petty squabbles of our prey.  More deaths meant more blood for us.  We were above that we felt and free from the pestilence and hunger of our host population we were able to thrive and build an invisible empire that still exists to this day.

How do we feed is the most common question.  The mess of Hollywood that childishly portrays our kind is incredibly humorous.  A have a hard time believing such an elegant species could evolve to have such a bloody and messy eating habit.  Plus if this were the case hiding in the shadows would have been much harder and discovery was our biggest fear.  Killing our host population would not benefit us, we need to feed nightly and those victims would start to pile us and would indeed be noticed.  We have never killed our prey and most don't even know they have been fed upon.  He is how it works.  When we sink our teeth into a victim a slight sedative is released through small holes in the canines that act as a syringe.  The sedative is manufactured by glands in the jaw.  The sedative also contains a light anticoagulant that keeps the blood from thickening.  After the sedative is injected the muscles above the canines begin to suck the blood from the vein.  There is no mess, the blood is extracted from the vein through the teeth and ingested.  In place of a stomach we have blood sacs that fill, similar to a tick or flea.  When they become engorged we can feel pressure like a full stomach a human might feel.  The sac cannot hold more than a pint of blood and we will not feed on a diseased or weakened victim as you would not feed on a diseased animal.  When the feed is complete the teeth push out another dose of the sedative only this time with a coagulant.  The teeth are so sharp there is little if any evidence of anything having occurred and the sedative keeps new memories from being formed thus making a human forge the encounter with us altogether.

I know that I may have been a bit scientific in my description but I would like to attempt to quell the myths about my species and bring the truth to light about our existence.  There is no evil, no demon, it is one species feeding on another and although we may be human, we bear little resemblance to our brethren except in external appearance.  Inside we are a different creature altogether.  I will explain more in future entries.
